Scottish Photography Book Is Unexpected Best Seller

A book showcasing photographs by some of Scotland’s best landscape photographers has become the best seller in tourist shops throughout Scotland this summer.

Launched in March this year, “The Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year – Collection 1” showcases the prize winning images from the annual Scottish landscape photography competition and has all but sold out in the 6 months since it was put into the shops.

The book’s author and competition founder Stuart Low said “I’ve been completely blown away by the success of the book and more than a bit relieved! It was a big gamble for me because I’d never put a book together before and most people read eBooks these days. This and the fact that there are very few book printers left, meant that it was very expensive to produce, so it was always a worry that it might not sell.”

The book’s success was echoed by Nicola Meekin of Castle Stalker View in Appin. She said “ We sell a lot of books in our gift shop each year, but sales of the Scottish landscape photographer book has been absolutely incredible. We sold out 5 times during the summer and we’ve just sold out again in the autumn break. Overall it’s sold more than all our other books put together so we’re delighted.”

The success of the book is something Mr Low puts down to diversity. “I think it’s a success because it’s different. It’s not your typical book of classic Scottish tourist views, but more an eclectic mix of familiar and unseen views by unknown photographers, and that makes it a very interesting read.” He added “The fact that proceeds from sales go back into funding exhibitions and promoting photographers is something that strikes a chord with folk too.”

Planning is already underway for the second showcase book to be launched in early 2016 and Mr Low is appealing for printing companies interested in producing the book to come forward.
